AFHN and the South East Food Hub on ABC Radio

“When food producers work with farmers markets and locally owned shops to deliver good quality, fresh food to everyone in the community, you have a ‘food system’.

Developing successful local food systems is what Kirsten Larsen from the University of Melbourne’s Victorian Eco Innovation Lab is doing.

She says success depends on having a wide range of locally produced food and the people to get that produce to customers through farmers markets, vege boxes, co-ops or hubs.

Ms Larsen has set up the South East Food Hub in Melbourne with ten growers and a growing number of customers.

Aggregated orders are taken to return as much as possible to farmer and the hub adds 25 percent onto the farmer’s price to streamline access to food for customers.

The food hub movement aims to increase options for customers wanting fresh produce at affordable prices.

It also wants a fairer return to farmers which together would make a truly sustainable food system.”
